I've fished nothing but cane for many years, and last fall purchased two of Joe's fine rods. Joe is first and foremost an artist and gentleman, and his rods reflect that talent. I recently pulled in a 24 inch cutthroat with his 9'6", 6wt using a really rotten 6X tippet, the delicate tip on the rod compensating for each of my miscues while bring the fine fish in...as I gingerly removed the fly the tippet material parted and I was left with a beautiful trophy to be returned to the stream. This would never had occurred with any of the plastic rods of my experience.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918514418757933899.post-7812853174229321312013-11-25T23:28:37.851-06:002013-11-25T23:28:37.851-06:00Just awesome! So glad to see that you got out and ...Just awesome! So glad to see that you got out and sampled the cutthroat fishing while you were out here. And with a sweet little cane rod! In reality, cutthroat fishing out here is ABOUT stalking and precision. Casting more than 40 or 50 feet generally puts you in the realm of diminishing returns.

One of the common complaints about the "plastic revolution" is that it's allowed people who don't understand fly rods to still build a pretty decent one. And there is some truth to that. On the other side of the argument, it's made some very good quality equipment available to a much wider range of people. It's also been interesting to watch the "parallel" in the cane world as well. Folks like Joe, Steve Pennington, Don Recker(to name just a couple)are building great bamboo rods for less than most top-end graphites...

Truly these are the good 'ol days when it comes to fly rods--AJ trout chasernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918514418757933899.post-47895424468642508042013-11-25T07:37:31.425-06:002013-11-25T07:37:31.425-06:00Erik.
