From what I see, the crap that is being passed off today as "the next killer pattern" could have been tied by any monkey with a third grader's IQ. They're not new....all they are are a re-arrangement of different materials on a hook from the "last killer pattern". There's never any explanation as to why this fly was constructed or why it's supposed to catch fish or the rationalization for a "new" fly. I think the real reason is "let's put it on Instagram and see how many 'likes' it can get.
I'm 72 years old and have been fly fishing since the late 50's. I've seen many innovations in the fly fishing world over those years from Cortland's "333" fly line through the latest graphite rods. I really believe that we reached the point where there's really nothing new. The fact that we are going back to fiberglass rods should tell us something! I know I sound like a crotchety old man and, to be honest, I kind of like the title. I decided about five years ago that I didn't like the direction fly fishing was taking after viewing some online ezines, forums, and websites. They've lost sight of what fly fishing means to me (and you). I follow some sites just to see how far things are straying from the path and get to chuckle when something or some method is being touted as "new", knowing I was using it or doing it years ago. I'll stick to the things that are dear to me in the way of rods, reels, flies, etc. Hell, they caught fish for me then and they still catch fish for me today. I've reached that stage of life where I don't need to catch every fish in the stream-------and I get to laugh to myself when I out-fish the others using my Blue-winged Olives, Adams's and Quill Gordon wet flies! Anyone who limits their fly fishing to 40' or less is just not getting all they can from fly fishing
Gnome outJeffrey L Hattonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11798957293772136305noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918514418757933899.post-44331185410034706602020-03-11T21:46:29.111-05:002020-03-11T21:46:29.111-05:00Right, but that wasn't fly fishing, it was fis...Right, but that wasn't fly fishing, it was fishing with a fly. Not that it's not good in its own right, but if casting a fly on a spinning rod isn't fly fishing, neither is tenkara. It's "fysshynge wyth an angle," a fly is just another 'lure' that can be used. Fly fishing didn't come about until the reel and the heavy line with light leader. For example, fishing with fine, gossamer lines made to be blown about is just blowline fishing, whether or not you use a fly. Fly casting is what makes fly fishing what it is.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918514418757933899.post-65938965716716733602020-03-09T07:27:07.319-05:002020-03-09T07:27:07.319-05:00Erik,
